Cache SSDs, essentially a requirement for SSDs, make PCs more responsive, allowing faster boot-up times than hard disk drives, according to IHS. Cache SSDs are also less expensive than conventional SSDs, making them a more economical means to enhance system performance than by the wholesale replacement of hard disk drives with solid state drives, IHS said.

Rebello said the trend began in the second half of 2009, when some wireless operators in Europe, North America, Japan and South Korea started to deploy LTE technology. About 200 mobile operators worldwide are now trialing, deploying or commercially operating 4G LTE networks, up from about 160 in 2010, Rebello said.

Such widespread support will drive carrier spending on LTE to surpass 3.5G by next year,” Rebello said.

LTE represents a strong revenue growth potential for infrastructure manufacturers and semiconductor suppliers, IHS said. But silicon suppliers must be ready to meet the challenges and demands that LTE solutions place on semiconductors and hardware architectures, the firm warned.

In particular, the 4G networks of the future must evolve to more heterogeneous architectures such as metro cells, which will be used to augment coverage or fill holes in areas of high data traffic, IHS said. These metro cells—also known as small cells—will be used alongside Wi-Fi hotspots to provide coverage in public spaces, IHS predicted.

Toyota began to deploy VoiceBox for advanced voice capabilities in the 2009 Lexus RX and more recently in Toyota’s Entune multimedia system.

VoiceBox’s patented technology determines context and intent from free form speech to dynamically accommodate a request. These capabilities allow VoiceBox (Bellevue, WA) to develop Personal Assistant applications for the automotive, personal navigation, computer/tablets and smart TV markets.

FPGA manufacturer Xilinx has demonstrated at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) the world's first Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based Ethernet Audio/Video Bridging (EAVB) network implementation optimized for carrying high-speed data traffic within the automobile.

As consumer expectations for higher resolution displays and graphics quality in their driver assistance, navigation and passenger entertainment systems grow, so do the associated challenges of moving content around the vehicle. The demonstration highlighted the capabilities of the new EAVB Development Kit co-developed with Xilinx Alliance Program member Digital Design Corp. (DDC) to give automotive system developers the framework and tools necessary to accelerate their development of applications that deliver a richer experience for drivers and passengers.

At the exhibit, the company showed the EAVB demonstration featuring multi-camera driver assistance and infotainment A/V sources streaming, simultaneously on a single network. In addition, a 3D vehicle surround view demonstration built on Spartan-6 FPGAs, highlighted Xilinx's commitment to real-time, multi-camera driver assistance solutions.
