<p style= ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Lucent Technologies Inc.'s Microelectronics Group here has added two ICs to its line of field-programmable system chips (FPSCs), which combine field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) with standard-cell logic on the same chip.

Distributors usually perform very well in this environment. Most distributors generated not only year-over-year growth in this segment but also sequential growth. This is quite extraordinary given the usual summer slow-down in this business. Furthermore, the European market, which is almost always softer during the summer, showed surprisingly good results, and the Asian markets are bouncing back strongly following the economic turmoil of a few years ago.

The RF chip is developed by Atmel subsidiary Temic Semiconductor. Called the T2901, the part enables wireless data to be transferred at distances of 10 meters. Operating at the 2.4-GHZ frequency band, the chip has a power output of 0 dBm.

Dubbed the AT76C551, the baseband controller is a single-chip device that performs the link-management and control functions. The controller is build around the ARM 7TDMI, a 32-bit RISC-chip core from ARM Ltd.

The reference design kit, which be available in the first quarter of 2000, will allow OEMs to develop a Bluetooth-enabled product for as little as $17, according to the company. Atmel will also sell the components separately, with prices depending on the device.

MILPITAS, Calif. — LSI Logic Corp. today (11/8) announced it is stepping up its investment in the communications market by establishing two new divisions focusing on broadband communications and wireless.

Within the communications industry, the broadband segment has grown tremendously, while the booming wireless market continues to develop its own unique needs,” said John Daane, executive vice president of communications, computer and ASIC products at LSI Logic. This strategic realignment will allow us to best serve these high-growth markets.”

The two new divisions have been split off from LSI Logic's Communications Division. The Broadband Communications Division is developing digital-signal processors (DSPs) and ARM processor cores, while the Wireless Division will focus on the wireless handset business.

Giuseppe Staffaroni today was named vice president and general manager of the Broadband Communications Division and Danny Biran will hold the same positions in the newly created Wireless Division.

The Broadband Communications Division is developing digital-signal processors (DSPs) and ARM processor cores. Staffaroni said his group is focusing on two primary objectives: powering broadband-access products that connect peripheral devices to the Internet, and supporting the bandwidth-intensive broadband networks that make up the Internet backbone.

The communications market has been driven heavily by a building boom of the Internet infrastructure,” Staffaroni said. Not only is the Broadband Communications Division powering wide area networks WANs, but we're also providing customers with technology to build state-of-the-art products which will change the way people access the Internet. We intend to develop intellectual property to further address these markets and expand our product line.”

ArtX burst onto the scene in May, when it was announced the startup would supply the graphics chip for the next-generation Nintendo game set, code-named Dolphin. Calle said the Dolphin product and the Acer device will use different cores.

The chip set, known as the Aladdin 7, will be an Acer product, with a 128-bit graphics bus, a geometry engine and the power to plot 12.5 million triangles per second. It is sampling now and will ramp into volume production next quarter, at $32 in quantities of 10,000.

Most of the integrated chip sets for the Socket 7 market have older graphics technology, which allows the PC OEMs to offer systems in the $499 range. But when users get them home and try to play some games, they find out the 3-D graphics on those machines are pretty pathetic,” said Nancy Hartsoch, chief operating officer for Acer. This one features a very powerful graphics engine.”

Acer is already working with Nvidia Corp. (Santa Clara, Calif.) on the Aladdin TNT2, an integrated graphics and core logic chip set that will aim at the Intel-compatible Slot 1/Socket 370 market. The device is now sampling and is due for volume production next month. It is priced at $33.

Although Nvidia's latest product, the GeForce256, offers transform and lighting technology, the Aladdin chip is based on Nvidia's older Riva TNT2 technology, and does not have a geometry engine.

To lay some of the groundwork in CPFR, cross-industry organizations are getting involved and are developing guidelines to make the transition easier, according to Miller. The Voluntary Interindustry Commerce Standards group is one such organization.
