Milpitas, Calif. — Intersil Corp. released a sync separator that extracts sync timing information from both standard and non-standard video inputs.

The ISL59885 provides support for HDTV and standard definition formats. The device provides composite sync, horizontal sync and vertical sync outputs. It requires no external programming or set resistors. This allows maximum system flexibility since it does not require an external microprocessor or manual configuration, said Sameer Vuyyuru, Intersil's director for High Speed Analog. Additionally, high definition video is flagged by the HD pin going low when the input horizontal frequency is greater than 20 KHz.

Existing sync separator architectures require significant involvement of the rest of the system to adjust the timing based on the incoming line rate,” Vuyyuru said. Our new ISL59885 eliminates that requirement by using a revolutionary frequency to current converter that auto calibrates the timing of the device. The device also includes a system power saving feature called HD Detect that allows the system designer to control the scaler parameters.”

For the first time, TV and display equipment suppliers have the option to use a single sync processing path that is robust over temperature and tolerant of the variations in broadcast, video and graphics standards worldwide, according to Vuyyuru.

Other features of the ISL59885 include NTSC, PAL, SECAM, HDTV, non-standard video support, a single 3-V to 5-V supply, and fixed 70-mV slicing of video input levels.

Artificial intelligence and other soft” technologies will be a central theme of the conference, hosted by the European Union-financed Network of Excellence for Innovative Production Machines and Systems (IPROMS; see http://conference.iproms.org).

While computer technology plays a big role in manufacturing, there is still much that can be accomplished. In addition to advances in intelligent systems, technologies such as systems-on-chip, wireless networks and advanced sensors are becoming commercially available in rugged systems that can be deployed on the factory floor.

For example, RFID chips are beginning to be used in stores and for inventory tracking, but the technology could be a boon on the manufacturing line, according to researchers at Dalian Jaotong University (China) and Leeds Metropolitan University (U.K.). The groups have been collaborating on a simulator for evaluating RFID technology in mechanical production systems such as gear manufacturing. Working from the basis of a typical existing production line, they simulated an alternative system using RFID and predicted that it would reduce costs by 8.39 percent.

An example of how artificial intelligence can transform design comes from a project at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics at the University of Patras (Greece). Two researchers there will present an innovative approach to parametric design that employs both genetic algorithms and fuzzy neural networks to help engineers find optimal solutions to design problems. First, the genetic algorithm searches a wide number of design variations to find an optimal set of parameters. Then, the neuro-fuzzy system controls parameter inputs around those ideal values to allow the designer to work with the solution, applying human expertise to refine the design.

AI is set to transform other important aspects of manufacturing as well, from decision support systems to scheduling to building more nimble manufacturing setups that can quickly swap out one project and take on another. Innovative Web-based control systems for remote robotic arms or for guiding autonomous robots also are in the works.
