Philips and TSMC have collaborated in process research and development since the founding of the Taiwan foundry in 1987. Philips is TSMC's largest shareholder, owning about 30% of its stock. TSMC and Philips also have formed a $1.2 billion 200-mm wafer foundry venture in Singapore, called Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Co.

The devices are available in both 4.1- and 4.2-volt options to accommodate Li-Ion batteries with coke or graphite anodes, Microchip said. The battery chargers feature low shutdown (1 microamp) and operating current (250 microamp) to extend battery life and improving system efficiency.

The MIT Society of Women Engineers will hold a conference on Engineering the Future: Careers in High Technology” in Kresge Auditorium on Saturday, March 16 beginning at 10 a.m.

Designers must find more imaginative ways of dealing with power consumption to avoid dramatic rises in standby current draw as processes move to 100nm.

At last week's Design, Automation and Test in Europe conference, Mike Kliment, chief technology officer of library developer Virtual Silicon, said sub-threshold leakage currents are on the increase.

Many early NPUs, particularly Intel's popular IXP1200, perform most packet processing in software running on one of several packet engines. This method provides the flexibility of implementing new protocols and algorithms. When scaling NPUs from 1 to 10 Gbits/second, however, designers found it difficult to provide enough programmable horsepower. At 200 MHz, a 10-Gbit/s NPU would require at least 64 packet engines.

As a result, most high-end NPU designers have offloaded portions of the packet-processing task into fixed-function units. These on-chip coprocessors function with little software intervention.

For example, AMCC's nP7510 has just six packet engines at 330 MHz. It uses an external search engine for classification, an on-chip policing engine and an external traffic-management chip set for queuing. A packet engine executes only about 70 instructions to fully process a packet.

At the far end of this continuum lie networking ASICs like Marvell's Prestera. Such ASICs are configurable for a variety of protocols and algorithms, but are not programmable.


Sildex from TNI-Valiosys has also been picked by Airbus for some of the A380 systems and the aircraft company after working with it on the A340. Airbus gone further by starting to use formal verification techniques to check pieces of real-time OS code for correct behaviour over conditions that would take too long to test with simulation.
