The study reported that salaries are rising even faster in hot developing countries. For example, although the average micro and nano salary in India is only $15,850, a full 81 percent expect a raise of more than 5 percent in 2006.


The study also noted that 36.7 percent of respondents in the microtechnology and nanotechnology sectors reported a degree at the level of Ph.D., M.D., or J.D., while 29 percent percent reported a master's level degree. Those earning the most were partners in legal services firms in the United States, while those earning the least were researchers in Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe.

Vishay Intertechnology's VEMI filter arrays are available in ultra-small leadless, plastic packages and can be used to protect data lines in space-critical mobile applications.

The VEMI arrays come in compact LLP75-6A, LLP75-7A, LLP70-9A, and FlipChip (BGA) packages and provide, respectively, in two-, three-, four-, and six-channel configurations.


The devices attenuate unwanted signals by more than 30 dB over the 900 MHz up to 2.3 GHz frequency range, with low line resistance values from 30 ohms to 100 ohms. Low leakage current and capacitance help to prolong battery life.

All six arrays provide transient protection for data lines as per IEC 6100042 (ESD) at 30kV (air and contact discharge) and IEC 6100045 (lightning) from 4 A to 5 A (tp = 8/20s).


They also are compliant with RoHS 2002/95/EC and WEEE 2002/96/EC.The four very small package options for these VEMI arrays are lead (Pb)-free.

The new arrays include the two-channel VEMI255A-HS3; three-channel VEMI353A-HA3, VEMI355A-HA3, and VEMI35AA-HA3; four-channel VEMI453A-HN2; and six-channel FlipChip VEMI65A6-FC2. The compact FlipChip in-line version is particularly well suited to use in portable electronics.

Solarflare reported that the majority of meeting time involved technical editing of the document in response to editorial comments received during the circulation of Draft 3.1 in the sponsor ballot. The Task Force clarified the short reach management feature in response to comments, which appear to be misunderstandings of the proposal and interoperability with the 100-meter mode. The document, prepared for recirculation and balloting as Draft 3.2, saw an overwhelming vote of 48 to 0 ( with one abstaining), while the Ethernet Working Group voted 72 to 1 to place the document on the IEEE 802 Review Committee (Revcom) agenda while the recirculation and balloting takes place.

The document is on track for IEEE 802 standards board ratification in June 2006. If the document does not gain any new disapprove votes with new technically required comments before the June Review Committee meeting, the IEEE 802.1an 10GBASE-T Standard will be completed.

With the 10GBASE-T Standard well on its way to completion, customers can start to plan deployment and should be specifically thinking about the testing and qualification of installed cabling.

Norwood, Mass.—Analog Devices has developed a loop-timed serializer-deserializer (SerDes) device for Passive Optical Networking (PON) terminals. Dubbed the ADN2865, the SerDes supports data rates from 12.3 Mbits/s to 2.7 Gbits/s and consumes less than 1-watt of power.

The ADN2865 is said to be the industry’s first SerDes to use a loop-timed architecture optimized for PON optical network terminals (ONTs). ADI’s patented dual-loop clock and data recovery CDR architecture improves jitter performance, which is said to exceed the SONET specifications by a factor of three in all categories (jitter generation, jitter tolerance, jitter transfer.)

When Ethernet over copper first went to 100 Mbits/second, its popularity forced a move to data grade” Category 5 twisted pair, a widely deployed alternative to cheaper Category 3 voice wiring. An alternative local-area network–token ring–used shielded twisted-pair, but its cost made it prohibitive in many applications.
