Bigelow said his goal of offering a four-week, low-earth-orbit trip at an inclusive training and transportation cost of $14.95 million by the year 2012 was one step toward a goal of bringing the cost of space tourism to $30,000 or $40,000 per journey.

China said it will use the network to provide positioning services in various sectors, including transportation, meteorology, petroleum prospecting, forest fire monitoring, disaster forecasting, telecommunications and public security. A satellite navigation and positioning system is of great significance in defending national interests as it touches political, economic and military fields,” the newspaper said.

The terminal is also equipped with a wireless LAN (IEEE 802.11 b/g) for high-speed Internet access. An SD card is used as a removable content storage device. A lithium polymer battery operates for up to about 50 hours.

SAN JOSE, Calif. &#151 Amid a seasonal lull in the IC industry, Gartner Inc. Thursday (April 19) lowered its capital equipment spending forecasts for 2007 and 2008. (See table below)

Overall capital spending is projected to hit $55.2 billion in 2007, down 1.5 percent over 2006, according to Gartner (Stanford, Conn.). Capital spending is projected to grow 10.7 percent to $61.1 billion in 2008, according to the research firm.

Worldwide semiconductor capital equipment spending is forecast to total $40.6 billion in 2007, a 3.2 percent decline from 2006. The market is expected to rebound in 2008, as spending is expected to reach $46.7 billion, a 14.9 percent increase.

This is below the previous forecast in December.

''Annual growth in device sales, anticipated at 6 percent, faces considerable downside risk because memory supply is overabundant, and CPU price competition continues,'' said Klaus Rinnen, managing vice president for Gartner's semiconductor manufacturing and design research group, in a statement. ''2007 may still be a decent year for semiconductor equipment manufacturers aligned with memory, but those that serve the rest of the market will face a weaker market than last year.''

Wafer fab equipment (WFE) revenue is expected to decline 0.7 percent in 2007. As a percentage of spending, memory will remain strong and account for more than 45 percent of WFE. Memory spending is expected to slow in the second half of the year, while logic integrated device manufacturer (IDM) and foundry spending should accelerate into 2008.

After growing more than 18 percent in 2006, packaging and assembly equipment (PAE) market revenue is projected to decline 12.2 percent in 2007. Gartner projects a vibrant PAE market in 2008 with growth of 20.2 percent.

ATE sales will be slow for most of 2007; the ATE market is expected to decline 11.2 percent in 2007, according to the firm.

MUNICH, Germany — In the first quarter of FY 2007, lithography equipment provider ASML achieved significant growth in revenues. The acquisition of Brion Technologies, a provider of lithography verification and optical proximity correction (OPC) tools, however, dragged down net profit.

The Veldhoven, Netherlands, based lithography tool vendor achieved in Q1 net sales of €960 million (approximately $1.3 billion), which corresponds to a growth of 53 percent, compared with Q1, 2006. Compared to Q4 2006 however, sales declined 10 percent.

Net income equaled € 153 million or 16 percent of sales. The Brion takeover with a one-time charge of €23 million is included in this figure. Nevertheless, net income almost doubled in comparison with the first quarter last year when the company earned €80 million or 12.7 percent of sales. Again, in comparison with Q4 2006, the figures declined; in that quarter the company had achieved a net profit of €206 million. Gross margin in Q1 declined slightly from 41.1 percent in Q4 2006 to 40.9 percent.

In Q1, the company accepted orders for 59 new and three refurbished systems, adding up to an order value of €911 million. The order backlog presently is €2.16 billion which equals approximately a half year's production.

IC Insights (Scottsdale, Ariz.) now expects 2 percent industry revenue growth, down from the 7 percent rise it predicted earlier. It blames bloated inventories, continued pricing pressures on flash memories and microprocessors, and the recent start of a DRAM price collapse.
