SanDisk Corp., which began manufacturing MultiMediaCard removable storage devices in Taiwan earlier this year, has reported that it expects to reach volume production on the devices in May.

Taiwanese IC packaging and test houses Siliconware Precision Industries Co. Ltd. and Siliconware Corp. are each handling the manufacturing process, which includes semiconductor packaging, testing and assembly. Both companies are located near foundry United Semiconductor Corp., which makes flash-memory chips for SanDisk's MMC devices.

In a statement, SanDisk said it opened the manufacturing center on the island this year in an effort to reduce production costs and increase capacity to meet budding demand for the card in Asia's markets. The company did not specify production levels, but estimated that MMC shipments from Taiwan would amount to millions of cards per month.

We are positioning SanDisk for large volume production of the MultiMediaCard on a turnkey basis from SPIL and SWC,” said Ralph Hudson, SanDisk's senior vice president of worldwide operations. The company is positioning itself to quickly ramp up to volume production of the MultiMediaCard.”

The MMC, which stores data like audio files for MP3 Internet players, and video data in digital still cameras, is one of two small form factor storage devices heavily promoted by SanDisk-the other being the CompactFlash card.

Bell Microproducts Inc. has announced a series of strategic moves aimed at fortifying its rapidly expanding computer-products distribution business.

StarCore has thus far revealed few details of the first implementation, the StarCore 440, but has made some very specific performance claims. The initial device has a projected clock speed of 300 MHz, yielding a maximum of 1.2 billion multiply-accumulate operations/second. With a 1.5-V supply, the power consumption of the core plus an unspecified amount of on-chip SRAM is projected to be less than 180 mW at 300 MHz.

In a sense, StarCore's adoption of a VLIW-based architecture validates TI's choice of a VLIW approach for its C62xx family. At the same time, StarCore 400 presents a strong challenge to TI. If the StarCore 440 delivers on its promises, the devices using it will be noticeably faster than current C62xx devices; but, more important, they will deliver that speed with much lower memory usage and power consumption, and with reduced code-generation complexity.

A hot-swap power manager (HSPM) can be used to design a simple, programmable, constant-current electronic load for 3-V to 5-Vdc power rails. Ordinarily, maximum current capability is limited to 2.7 A for this part type, but higher currents can be obtained using external n-channel MOSFETs. The current would then be limited only by the safe operating area of the FET. An undervoltage lock-out trigger on the Unitrode UCC3919 prevents operation when the input power rail is below 2.75 V.

The circuit can also be configured to operate as a pulsed load. In pulse mode, load current will be demanded in pulses with user-programmable pulse width, leading edge rate and maximum current level (IMAX). Operation of the HSPM as an electronic load is based on the on-chip linear-current amplifier that controls the MOSFET gate voltage to equalize the voltage drops across R1 and RS relative to VDD. The load current is programmed by R1, R2 and RS as defined by: IMAX = R1 |VIBIAS|/(R1 + R2) RS amps,where VIBIAS is the voltage (1.5 V) on the IBIAS pin relative to VDD.

The two startups nonetheless have different approaches. While Monterey speaks of simultaneous” execution of the various physical-design steps, Magma is using what Madhavan called a non-iterative, correct-by-construction flow” with no iterations, even within Blast Fusion. Magma (Cupertino, Calif.) thus appears to have a more sequential methodology.
