Chinese technologists see AI as a golden opportunity to compete with their Western peers. Without ruinous delays or expenditures just trying to catch up, AI gives China a chance to leapfrog the West,” said David Yang, chairman and CEO of ZGMicro, during a roundtable discussion at the Summit hosted by AspenCore, publisher of EE Times.

The San Jose chip manufacturer said it will buy privately held system-on-a-chip design company In-System Design Inc. (ISD) for $45 million in cash and assumed options to gain the Boise, Idaho, company's personal communication applications.

Revenue for PCB and MCM layout totaled $102 million in the first quarter. Revenue growth for PCB and MCM layout in Q1 was 12% over Q1 2000, the tenth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth for the category.

But the good news for the first quarter of 2001 belies the current economic slowdown, and few expect revenue results for Q2 through Q4 to be as rosy.

Double-digit growth for four straight quarters is a welcome result in virtually any industry, at almost any time,” said Ray Bingham, EDA Consortium chairman and president and CEO of Cadence Design Systems. Despite the economic downturn, our customers understand the value of investing in design automation solutions today in anticipation of tomorrow's design challenges.”

Ry Schwark, a spokesperson for Mentor Graphics Corp., said the Q1 data illustrates how the EDA industry is often late to react to both positive and negative market stimuli. The first half of the year was reasonably good for EDA companies. In general EDA companies don't follow semiconductor economic cycles,” Schwark said. Mentor still expects to see growth year-on-year.”IC layout fueled revenue growth for the industry for the second consecutive quarter. IC layout revenue grew 42% in Q1 2001 to reach $246 million, a new record for the first quarter. But semiconductor intellectual property revenue totaled $26 million in Q1 2001, a 27% decline from Q1 2000.

CAE, the largest tool category within EDA, generated revenues totaling $469 million in Q1 2001, 8% higher than Q1 last year. CAE growth was led by formal & functional verification tools, which increased 35% in Q1 to more than $35 million. Schematic entry tools and analog & mixed-signal simulators also posted double-digit growth in the first quarter.

North America, the EDA industry's largest revenue-generating region, grew 15% (vs. Q1 2000) to reach $560 million in total revenues, a new Q1 record. This marks the third consecutive quarter of double-digit growth, and the fourth quarter in a row that the region has generated over a half billion dollars. Revenues from North America comprised 57% of the worldwide total in the first quarter, matching the region's share from year 2000.

Japan surpassed Western Europe in EDA consumption in Q1 on the strength of 17% revenue growth (vs. Q1 2000). EDA revenues in Japan reached $189 million in Q1, 19% of the worldwide total. Western Europe comprised 18% of the worldwide total, generating $174 million on 4% growth. EDA's smallest region, Rest-of-World, led all regions in growth this quarter, increasing 20% in Q1 to $63 million in revenue and 6% of the global total. This marks the tenth consecutive quarter of double-digit growth for the Rest-of-World region.

Revenue for software that runs on UNIX platforms totaled $689 million in Q1 2001, 15% more than Q1 2000. UNIX revenue comprised 84% of all EDA software revenue in the quarter. Revenue for software that runs on Windows-based platforms increased 26% to reach $127 million, or 16% of the EDA software revenue total.

According to the report, reporting EDA companies employed 15,500 people in the first quarter of 2001. With revenues totaling nearly one billion dollars, annualized industry revenue per employee now exceeds $250,000,” Bingham said.

SAN MATEO, Calif.—A financial analyst, concerned about increased competition and Gerry Hsu's continued involvement with the company, this week painted a dreary picture of Avanti's near-term earnings potential.

The report, from DA Davidson financial analyst Bill Frerichs, reiterates an underperform/sell” rating on Avanti, the lowest rating DA Davidson issues.

Frerichs said that the fallout and cash loss from the Avanti criminal trial in addition to civil suits from Cadence Design Systems and SVR will significantly reduce Avanti's earnings over the next year.
