CML Microcircuits is targeting its new wideband RF I/Q modulator IC at the designers of, broadband wireless access systems (WiMAX), microwave link transmitters (including ODFM/COFDM), cellular picocell/nanocell systems, satellite communications and any other wideband wireless infrastructure systems requiring high performance I/Q modulation.

The CMX993W is a highly integrated wideband quadrature modulator, specifically tailored to offer 30MHz to 1GHz operation with excellent wideband noise performance across multiple modulations and bandwidths. The quadrature modulator provides translation from baseband I/Q signals to a modulated RF signal; the wideband inputs (up to 100MHz) can be driven single-ended or differentially for optimum performance. The CMX993W also boasts two integrated and matched double-balanced mixers, driven from a buffered, quadrature, split local oscillator. The ‘LO’ frequency is divided by either 2 or 4, with mixers forming an I/Q vector modulator with programmable gain stages (offering a desirable 30dB of gain control in 2.5dB step increments).

Many additional features are included, such as gain control, uncommitted differential amplifiers, a digital control interface and an SPI compatible interface (for baseband devices of differing voltages). Advanced power management of individual internal blocks is also offered, giving optimum system performance under all conditions.

Three factors are driving the rise of the new 10GE design wins. The servers have the necessary plumbing, applications need more bandwidth and the controller prices are falling, he said.

The latest crop of servers sport processors such as Intel's Xeon 5500 (aka Nehalem) with the 5 GHz PCI Express 2.0 interconnect capable of handling multiple 10G I/O streams. Those servers need more bandwidth due to increasing system utilization, thanks to multiple virtual machines running on each physical processor.

Meanwhile, 10GE adapter cards now cost as little as $600 per port, down from as much as $1,200 for first-generation cards three years ago. Gigabit Ethernet cards with optical connections can cost as much as $200 per port, making the switch to 10G cost-effective for systems using three or four ports.

Optical connections make up as much as 60 percent of the 10G Ethernet market, as copper options are still struggling to cut costs and power consumption, Crehan said.

Bosch has bought a minority position of almost 40 percent of Aleo Solar AG's shares. The company said it paid €46 million (about $65.7 million) for the Oldenburg (Germany) based manufacturer of solar modules. At the same time, Bosch issued a tender offer to the shareholders, offering €9 which is 43 percent above Aleo's average share price of the past three months. Bosch plans to acquire at least 75 percent of Aleo's shares.
