SAN JOSE, Calif. – The NVM Express group held its first plugfest this week in anticipation of members shipping later this year the first flash drives using the new interface. NVMe aims to lower latency and cost of solid-state drives on a PCI Express bus while easing the job of creating software drivers for them.

Eleven companies participated in the plugfest including Dell Inc., Fastor Systems, Integrated Device Technology, Intel, Samsung, SanDisk, Stec and Western Digital. Seagate, a member of the NVMe working group, did not take part in the event held at the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab May 13-16.

Drives passing the group’s compliance tests will be posted on the NVMe Integrators List . The current NVMe version 1.1 spec was published in October 2012.

A separate group, not quite so far along, is finishing a spec in the T10 standards group for storage devices that also will ride PCIe but use the SCSI command set. The first SCSI Express products could emerge before the end of the year and has support from companies including Hewlett-Packard and PMC-Sierra.

Solid-state drives started off using the low cost serial ATA interface. Startup Fusion IO pioneered moving the drives to the faster PCI Express interface.

Use of an external regulator to turn off the power to the user interface unit. This method is significantly different from the methods discussed above. In this method, the host controller manages the average power consumption of the system.

Battery powered applications (e.g. mobiles phones) need extremely low power in standby mode. The system may contain multiple other units like an IR receiver and ambient light sensors which may also need to be in low-power mode.

In such applications, the host controller controls an external regulator or a power management integrated circuit (PMIC) that is used to control and regulate the power to the capacitive controller and other devices. Figure-2 below shows the block diagram of a typical implementation.

The host controller turns off the power to the capacitive controller and other devices during the standby mode. This provides the lowest power in standby mode and allows for longer battery life in battery-powered applications.

This completes the second part of this article series. Other methods of optimizing the average power in capacitive sensing designs, especially methods using advanced capacitive controllers, will be covered in the next part.
